Passport Check 🇵🇭 Critical
6 months validity beyond exit date + 2 blank pages. HK will turn you back — not warn you. Check now.
📋
eTravel Registration 🇵🇭
Register at etravel.gov.ph within 72 hours before your flight. Free. Save the QR code as a screenshot.
💸
Travel Tax 🇵🇭
Check if it’s included in your ticket (most airlines bundle it). If not: Economy ₱1,620 · Business ₱2,700. Pay at TIEZA counter or tieza.gov.ph.
✈️
Know Your Terminal 🇵🇭
Cebu Pacific and HK Express currently fly from NAIA Terminal 3 — but terminals shift. Always verify on your e-ticket before heading out.
📲
eSIM — Buy Before You Board Do This
Activates before landing — Google Maps and MTR Mobile work the moment you step off the plane. No SIM counter hunting.
🔌
Type G Plug Adapter Most Forgotten
Philippines = flat pins (A/B). HK = 3-pin British square (Type G). Without one, nothing charges. Buy in Manila — airport sells them at a markup.
📱
Apps to Install at Home (WiFi)
MTR Mobile — train planner · Citymapper — best nav in HK · Google Maps — download HK + Macau offline · HKO — typhoon signals (critical May–Nov) · Octopus — balance + Easy Ride · Google Translate — download Cantonese offline pack · Uber (no Grab in HK)

Octopus Card — Pre-Order This Saves time
It’s how HK works — MTR, buses, trams, Star Ferry, 7-Eleven, McDonald’s. Pre-order on Klook, collect at airport Counter A13. No queue, no stress.
ℹ️
No arrival form neededHK abolished its arrival card in October 2024. No QR code, no form, no pre-registration. Just your passport and documents.
✅
It’s efficient — just be preparedHK immigration is one of the fastest in Asia. Officers are professional. If you’re prepared, you’ll be through in minutes.
📱
Have ready on screen before reaching the officerReturn flight screenshot + hotel booking confirmation. Passport open to your photo page. Don’t be searching for these at the counter.
💬
What they’ll ask — answer short and directPurpose? Tourism. How long? X nights. Staying where? Name your hotel. Return ticket? Yes — show it.
⚠️
Don’t mention relatives working in HKYou are entering as a tourist. Your purpose is tourism. Don’t volunteer that family members are employed here — even if true and innocent, it can complicate an otherwise smooth entry.
🪪
You’ll get a landing slip, not a stampSmall thermal paper slip showing your permitted stay date. Keep it inside your passport the whole trip. Hotels may ask for it. Surrender it when you leave.
🚀
e-Channel — for returning visitorsAvailable if you’ve entered HK via HKIA at least twice in the past 24 months. Enrol at the counter on arrival — it’s free and future visits clear in under 30 seconds.
👔
Dress appropriatelyNeat and presentable. Not a suit — just clearly someone on holiday. First impressions at the counter matter more than people expect.
🇵🇭
Filipino Passport — Hong Kong · 14 days visa-freeNo visa needed. Arrival day is Day 0, not Day 1 — count carefully. Overstaying is a criminal offense (arrest, deportation, future entry ban). No work or study under visa-free entry.
🇲🇴
Filipino Passport — Macau · 30 days visa-freeMacau is a completely separate jurisdiction. When you take the ferry, you exit HK and enter Macau separately. Two permits running simultaneously — you get the full 14 days HK and 30 days Macau independently.
🌏
Other nationalitiesMost Western passports get longer stays. Some require advance visa. Check: immd.gov.hk →
⚠️
HK ≠ Macau ≠ Mainland ChinaThree completely separate immigration systems. Your HK and Macau visa-free entries cannot be used for Shenzhen or Guangzhou. Filipinos require a Chinese visa to enter the Mainland — do not cross without checking.

☀️
Sweet Spot: October–DecemberClear skies, low humidity, 19–28°C, best visibility from The Peak. Target mid-October onwards — Golden Week (Oct 1–7) brings millions of mainland tourists, hotels fill, theme parks are severely crowded.
🧥
Winter (Dec–Feb) — The Filipino Cold Shock10–18°C at night, January coldest. This feels genuinely cold for Filipinos — not “bring a cardigan” cold. Pack a proper jacket, long trousers, closed shoes. Cold fronts from the mainland occasionally push below 10°C. CNY 2026: February 17 (Year of the Horse) — spectacular but crowded and cold outside.
🌫️
Spring (Mar–May) — Nice but Foggy18–26°C, less crowded, cheaper hotels. Caveat: visibility at The Peak and the harbour is frequently poor in March–April. If the skyline view is your main goal, spring is hit-or-miss.
🌀
Typhoon Signal 8 (T8) — City Shuts DownSchools, shops, restaurants, ferries, taxis, and flights all stop. Stay in hotel away from windows. HKO gives ~2 hours advance warning before T8 — stock water and snacks in that window. Download the HKO app before flying if visiting May–November. T8 typically lasts hours to a day; the city bounces back quickly.

Octopus in MacauStandard Octopus cards are NOT accepted in Macau shops or restaurants. Cards with the China T-Union logo (most 2025–2026 cards) work on Macau public buses only. For everything else in Macau: HKD cash.
HK uses Hong Kong Dollar (HKD), pegged to USD since 1983 (USD 1 ≈ HKD 7.75–7.85). Rough anchor: HKD 100 ≈ solid local lunch for two. Check xe.com before you go.
💳
Three Philippine cards with zero international ATM feesGCash (Visa) — confirmed zero · GoTyme Bank (Visa) — confirmed zero · Maribank (Mastercard) — zero for ATM withdrawals + in-store; 2% applies only to overseas online purchases in foreign currency. All three beat traditional PH bank cards. Verify current fees before travel — these change.
🏧
Best ATMs: HSBC and Bank of ChinaAt every MTR exit, mall, and inside HKG arrivals hall. Bank of China in arrivals: confirmed working with GCash, max HKD 2,500 per transaction. No surcharge from the HK side.
⚠️
Always choose HKD at every terminalWhen ATM or card machine asks “HKD or PHP?” — always HKD. Dynamic Currency Conversion (DCC) rates are set by the terminal operator and are significantly worse. This applies at ATMs and all card readers.
🍽️
Tipping — not expected like in the USSit-down restaurants: Most already add 10% service charge on the bill — that IS your tip. Street food / cha chaan teng / fast food: no tip expected. Taxi: round up to nearest dollar. Tour guide / driver: HKD 50–100 is appreciated. Watch out: some restaurant terminals prompt for an additional tip even after charging the service charge — you don’t need to add more.
💧
Tap waterWHO-standard supply. Fine for brushing teeth. Bottled water for drinking — HKD 6–10 per 500ml at any 7-Eleven.

Ding Ding Tram — HK Island only · HKD 3.30 flatRunning since 1904. Sit upstairs front row. One of the best slow experiences in HK. Critical rule: Board at the REAR door. Pay and exit at the FRONT door. Opposite of a bus — this trips everyone up.
⛴️
Star Ferry — Central ↔ TST · HKD 3–6.50Operating since 1888. Upper deck, evening, first ride in HK — this is a non-negotiable. Not the fastest way across the harbour — take it because the crossing IS the experience. Every 6–12 min, 06:30–23:30.
🚖
Taxis — Colour-coded by zoneRed = urban (Kowloon + HK Island). Green = New Territories. Blue = Lantau only. Red taxi flag-fall HKD 27. Always confirm meter is running before you move. Most authentically local district on HK Island’s tourist circuit. Blue House: 1920s–30s tenement buildings on Stone Nullah Lane, painted bright blue, yellow, orange — free, evocative, very photogenic. Wet markets, old shophouses, last few dai pai dongs still operating on the street.

TST Promenade + Symphony of Lights
1
The harbourfront walk from Star Ferry Pier east past the Clock Tower and Avenue of Stars. Symphony of Lights: every night at 8PM — coordinated lights across both sides of the harbour. Between Jordan Road and Kansu Street, Yau Ma Tei. Go after 8PM — before that it’s half-set-up and anticlimactic. HK’s last real night market: food stalls (claypot rice, curry fishballs), fortune tellers reading palms, occasional Cantonese opera. Bargain everything — first price to a tourist is never the real price. Start at 40–50%. MTR Jordan Exit A or Yau Ma Tei Exit A2.

One of HK’s most active Taoist temples. People come to pray, burn incense, and shake fortune-telling sticks (kau cim). One MTR stop from Diamond Hill — combine both in one afternoon. Free.

One principle: near an MTR station, private room, clean bathroom. HK rooms are small across every price tier — this is real estate reality, not a quality issue. Don’t overpack. The city is your living room.

⚠️ 3% Hotel Accommodation Tax (reintroduced Jan 2025) is added on top of your quoted rate at check-in. Check billing breakdown on Klook/Agoda carefully.

📍 All pinned in the HK Food Spots Google Map above.

HK is one of the great food cities on earth. The worst thing you can do is eat cautiously. Order the thing you don’t recognise. Sit at the shared table. Eat fast, move on. That’s how this city eats.
🥯
THE TRINITY — Three things, under HKD 50, non-negotiable1. Cart Noodles (车仔面) — noodles assembled from a cart: choose broth + 4–5 toppings (fish balls, beef brisket, curry squid). HKD 40–60. Any noodle shop in Mong Kok back streets with people inside eating = correct choice.

2. Egg Waffles (鸡蛋仔) — golden-crispy outside, pillowy inside, pulled apart bubble by bubble. Buy one from a Fa Yuen Street (Sneaker Street) vendor while shopping, eat it walking. Lee Keung Kee (Michelin-rec) for the proper version. HKD 20–35. Eat immediately.

3. Pineapple Bun + Butter + Milk Tea — no pineapple involved. Cold butter slab inside a hot fresh bun, melting as you eat. With HK-style milk tea (strong black tea through a silk stocking, evaporated milk). Kam Wah Café, 47 Bute Street, Prince Edward — this is Day 1 breakfast. “Bolo yau” = HKD 13. Total with milk tea: HKD 30.

⚠️
Two shopping warningsElectronics shops in TST (Nathan Rd to waterfront): bait-and-switch pricing is real. Prices not displayed, costs escalate after agreement, aggressive accessory upselling. Buy electronics only from official brand stores or malls (Fortress, Broadway Photo in Mong Kok Computer Centre).

Counterfeit goods at Ladies Market / Temple Street: technically illegal in HK and under PH customs rules. NAIA inspects. Know the risk before buying.

Secret weapon: Free casino shuttle busesEvery major casino (Venetian, Galaxy, MGM, Wynn, Grand Lisboa, City of Dreams) runs free shuttles from both ferry terminals to their properties — open to anyone, not just hotel guests. No gambling required. Exit immigration, follow shuttle bus signs, board whichever goes closest to where you’re headed. Getting around Macau this way is mostly free. Caveat: some large casinos now require a hotel or casino receipt to board their return shuttle. For the return leg: public bus (MOP 6) or taxi if needed.
⏰
Last ferry — the most important detail in this sectionMiss it and you’re in Macau overnight whether you planned for it or not. TurboJET last sailing from Macau Outer Harbour: ~23:30. Cotai Water Jet from Taipa: ~23:30. Always verify on the day you travel — times vary by day and season. Rule: aim to board your return ferry by 10PM. The 11PM rush at the terminal on weekends is real.
🇲🇴
Macau immigration — quick notes🇵🇭 30 days visa-free (separate from HK). Bring your passport. You’ll get a Macau entry stamp or slip — keep it. HKD accepted everywhere in Macau. Do NOT accept MOP as change if returning to HK — MOP is not exchangeable in HK easily.
The day is a one-way journey: Peninsula → Coloane → Cotai → ferry home. You don’t backtrack. You move with the city.
🕖
7:30AM — Board your ferry from HKFirst or second sailing. TurboJET from Sheung Wan or TST (pre-book). Arrive Macau 8:30–9:30AM.
🕘
9:00AM — Senado Square → Heritage Trail (2 hours)From Outer Harbour: free MGM Macau shuttle → 3-min walk to Senado Square. Black and white Portuguese mosaic cobblestones. Go before 9AM if possible — tour groups arrive at 10AM. Then walk north: St. Dominic’s Church (15 min) → Ruins of St. Paul (iconic facade — 5 min photo stop, there’s no interior) → Monte Fort (walk up the ramp, free 360° views, 15 min). The surrounding souvenir lanes are equally interesting.
🕛
11:00AM–12:30PM — Heritage walk back south (eat here)Pork Chop Bun from a nearby stall: MOP 40–55, eat hot immediately. Serradura (sawdust pudding) from any café: MOP 20–30, always order one. Free almond cookie samples from souvenir stalls — good pasalubong.
🥧
12:30PM — The detour that makes the day: Lord Stow’s, ColoaneBus 15/21A/26A from Senado Square (~25 min) or taxi (~MOP 80–100). Lord Stow’s Bakery, 1 Rua do Tassara, Coloane Town Square · Daily 7AM–9PM. The original bakery, opened 1989. Warm, creamy custard egg tart — Michelin-listed, MOP 13 per tart. Order at least two. Walk around the village 15 min: Chapel of St. Francis Xavier, fishing village lanes, zero casino energy. The Venetian branch is fine. The original is different.
🕑
2:30PM — Cotai Strip (2.5 hours)Taxi from Coloane to Venetian (~MOP 60–80). The Venetian Macao: walk the Grand Canal Shoppes — painted-sky ceiling, gondolas, opera singers. The scale is genuinely impressive. Lean into it. The Parisian Macao: half-scale Eiffel Tower next door, good photo, 10 min. Galaxy Macau: impressive resort complex. Casino floors open to all — spectacular to walk through, gambling completely optional.
🕔
5:00PM — Dinner on Cotai, then head to ferryTim Ho Wan at the Venetian (consistent with HK branches). Food courts inside Galaxy and Venetian also reliable. Target the 8PM–9PM sailing back — comfortable buffer, avoids the 11PM rush. Free casino shuttle to Taipa Terminal from any major hotel lobby.

What overnight unlocks: Taipa Village at 8AM15-min walk or short taxi from Cotai. Rua do Cunha (Taipa Food Street): Lord Stow’s Taipa branch for breakfast egg tarts (baked on-site, before queues form) + Tai Lei Loi Kei pork chop buns from the morning. Taipa Houses Museum (5 preserved Portuguese colonial villas, free) is stunning in morning light. Weekday mornings: nearly alone. That’s when Taipa is at its best.
🍗
Dinner the night before — do it properlyA Petisqueira (Taipa Village): Rustic, genuinely excellent Portuguese food. Octopus salad, clams, seafood rice. Reservations essential — two dinner sittings only, walk in on the morning to book. Rua de São João 15, Taipa, Tue–Sun.

António (Taipa Village): Portuguese chef, long-standing reputation. African Chicken (coconut + chilli) is the signature. Rua dos Clérigos 7, Taipa.

MFM Exit Option — fly home from Macau airportBoth Cebu Pacific and Philippines AirAsia fly MFM → MNL direct, ~17 flights/week, flight time ~2h25min. If your itinerary is HK → Macau overnight → home, flying out of MFM saves the ferry back + HKG journey. Compare fares before committing — MFM has fewer frequencies than HKG.
Macau food sits at the intersection of Portuguese colonial history, Cantonese tradition, and the influence of Portuguese Africa. You cannot eat Macanese food anywhere else.

1. Lord Stow’s Egg Tart — The OriginalAndrew Stow opened his Coloane bakery in 1989, adapted Portugal’s pastel de nata, and created Macau’s most famous food export. Warm, creamy, barely-sweet custard in a flaky shell. MOP 13 per tart. Three locations: Coloane Town Square (original, Michelin-listed, daily 7AM–9PM) · Taipa Village Rua do Cunha (baked on-site) · The Venetian Grand Canal Shoppes.

2. Pork Chop Bun — Tai Lei Loi KeiThick boneless pork chop, marinated, fried crispy — served inside a soft Portuguese bread roll. No sauce, no condiments. Just the bun. Eat hot — it’s best for 8 minutes after coming off the grill. Taipa Village branch on Rua Correia da Silva. MOP 40–55. Cash only.

3. African Chicken (Galinha à Africana)Arrived in Macau in the 1950s with the Portuguese garrison from Mozambique and Angola — coconut, peanut, chilli marinade, grilled or baked. Ruins: Four-tiered Baroque stone facade — all that survived after a typhoon fire in 1835. Genuinely historic, worth 15 min. Honest take: it is a facade and nothing more. Don’t plan your whole day around it. Museum of Sacred Art and Crypt underneath (small fee) is worth the extra 15 min.

Monte Fort (right of the Ruins, follow the ramp): 17th-century Portuguese fortress. The most underused 15 min in Macau — free 360° views over the Peninsula and Cotai skyline. Most visitors photograph the Ruins and never realise the fort is right there.

Which day — this matters enormouslyBest: Tue / Wed / Thu. Consistent lowest-crowd days. OK: Mon, Fri. Avoid: Sat, Sun, all public holidays. On weekends, World of Frozen queues hit 75–90 min by 10:30AM. The same ride on a Tuesday morning: 10–15 min. The difference is enormous. Disneyland on a weekday = no Premier Access needed and you can do everything.
🕘
Arrival strategyAt the gate 30 min before opening (usually 10:30AM — verify on the app). Early Park Entry Pass (HKD 199): 1 hour before general admission. First move inside: walk directly to World of Frozen — Frozen Ever After. Do not stop at Main Street. Do not browse shops. Wandering Oaken’s Sliding Sleighs next. By the time you exit, queues everywhere else are still manageable.
🎢
Priority order for rides1. World of Frozen (highest demand — Frozen Ever After + Sliding Sleighs) · 2. Mystic Manor (Mystic Point — trackless dark ride, completely unique to this park, not at any other Disneyland, all ages, no drops) · 3. Big Grizzly Mountain (Grizzly Gulch, backwards coaster) · 4. Iron Man Experience (Tomorrowland) · 5. Festival of the Lion King show (Adventureland — 28-min theatrical, check schedule on the app, catch it once)
🎆
Don’t miss: Parade + Momentous Nighttime SpectacularFriendtastic! Parade — 11 floats, HKDL’s biggest ever. Check app for time, secure spot 20 min early. Momentous — drone + light show above the castle. Closes the day. Plan your last ride and dinner before it. Plan your Castle of Magical Dreams photo at opening (morning light) and again at night during the show.
🎟️
Premier Access — when it’s worth itSingle attraction from HKD 89. Package of 3 or 8. Worth buying: weekends, public holidays, peak periods when queues hit 60–90 min. Not needed: Tue–Thu non-holiday weeks. Smart middle ground: buy Premier Access for Frozen Ever After only (HKD 89) and go at opening — use it as a backup if queues surge later.
🍱
3-in-1 Meal Voucher mathHKD 293 on Klook vs HKD 315 direct. Covers lunch + dinner + snack at designated quick-service restaurants. Walk-in equivalent: HKD 320–380. Always buy this on Klook — saves HKD 30–90 depending on what you order.
🏨
Hotel or day trip?Day trip from Mong Kok: Sunny Bay MTR → Disneyland Resort Line, 35–40 min total. What most Filipino travelers do. Disneyland Hotel: character breakfast, themed pool, Early Park Entry included in rate. Worth it for young Disney-obsessed kids or special occasion — for everyone else, the day trip saves significant money with minimal compromise.
The route: Tung Chung MTR → Cable Car → Ngong Ping → Big Buddha → Po Lin Monastery → Cable Car back → Citygate Outlets. The whole day runs off the Tung Chung Line — no complicated navigation.
🚡
Which cabin? — honest recStandard Cabin (solid lower walls + windows): ~HKD 235–290 round trip. Crystal Cabin (glass floor): ~HKD 340–400. Crystal+ Cabin (full glass, max 10 guests): ~HKD 400–550.

Honest recommendation: On a clear day, upgrade to at least Crystal — looking straight down at open sea from 500m is one of those moments. On a foggy day (common March–May), the cabin choice matters less. Crystal also boards faster than Standard on busy days — many people choose Standard to save money, so Crystal’s queue is shorter.

Hours: Mon–Fri 10AM–6PM · Sat/Sun/PH 9AM–6:30PM. Last boarding ~30 min before closing. May suspend in strong wind or rain — check the day before.
🧘
Big Buddha (Tian Tan) + Po Lin Monastery268 steps from the base to the Buddha platform. Steep but entirely doable — rest at the landings, look back over Lantau. The view from the top is one of the best in HK. Free to visit exterior. Small fee for the interior (Buddhist relics, peaceful, worthwhile).

Po Lin Monastery: Free. One of HK’s largest, active. Vegetarian restaurant on the grounds is an institution — locals eat here. 30–45 min.
🛍️
Citygate Outlets — the built-in second halfCable car back to Tung Chung → directly above Tung Chung MTR Exit C. Open 10AM–10PM. 150+ outlet brands: Nike, Adidas, Coach, Kate Spade, Burberry, Polo, New Balance, Samsonite, Gap. Year-round 20–50% off. Budget 1.5–2 hours. This is why you return via Tung Chung instead of taking the direct bus down.
☁️
Weather is everythingClear day: cable car crosses open sea with views back to HK, Macau, and across to the mainland. Foggy/overcast: you may see nothing but white cloud. Check the forecast the night before. If foggy, shift the Lantau day in your itinerary.
🎡
Pre-book on Klook — skips the queue, saves money
🕓
Strategy: arrive at Lower Terminus (Garden Road) by 4:00–4:30PMPre-booked tickets → go directly to the tram boarding queue (faster than the ticket queue). Ride up: tram climbs at ~70 degrees through colonial hillside streets. Sit on the right side going up for the better view down the incline. The angle is real — your bag will slide. Ride takes 7–8 min.
🌆
Sky Terrace 428 vs the free optionsSky Terrace 428 (paid): fully open-air, 360° unobstructed views at 428m. Open 8:30AM–10PM from May 1, 2026. Worth paying — unobstructed 360° matters. The view north to HK Island’s harbour AND south to the other side of HK Island simultaneously.

Peak Galleria Rooftop (free): good harbour-facing view, slightly less elevation, not fully 360°, crowded.

Lion’s Pavilion (free): 15-min walk along Lugard Road. Circular path, different view angles, quieter than the Terrace.
🌃
Stay until dark. Don’t rush back on the first tram.Budget 2 hours minimum. Golden hour light on the city → the harbour going bronze → city lights switching on below you. This progression is the whole experience. Take the tram back down — the 70-degree descent through the evening hillside is as good as the ascent.

🔌
Type G plug adapter — most forgotten itemPhilippines: flat pins (A/B). HK: 3-pin British square (Type G). Without one, nothing charges. Buy in Manila — airport sells at markup. Most chargers are 100–240V so you only need the adapter, not a converter.
🔋
Power bank — non-negotiableYou will be on your phone for maps, Octopus, Klook vouchers, photos all day. Your phone will die by 3PM without one. Minimum 10,000 mAh.
🧥
Clothes — pack for the season, not ManilaOct–Dec: T-shirts + light jacket for day. Proper jacket + long trousers for evenings — 17–20°C after dark feels genuinely cool.
Jan–Feb: This is coat weather. 10–18°C, cold fronts can push it lower. Pack a proper coat, closed shoes, scarf. HK in January cold-shocks almost every Filipino first-timer.
Jun–Sep: Hot and humid 28–32°C but carry a cardigan — malls and MTR are aggressively air-conditioned. Temperature swing outside/inside is extreme.
👟
Footwear — at least one pair of proper walking shoesHK has hills, cobblestones, steep escalators, wet markets with slippery floors, 268 steps to the Big Buddha. Sandals work for flat market areas. Not for the Peak, Ngong Ping, or Macau’s Heritage Trail.
🌂
Foldable umbrella — alwaysEssential Jun–Sep (storms appear in 20 min), useful year-round. HK rain is serious. Buying one from a Mong Kok stall when already soaking is more annoying and more expensive.
👜
Bag strategyCrossbody bag: recommended for Mong Kok markets and crowded MTR — pickpocketing is rare but not zero. Foldable shopper: carry one — you will accumulate bags at Don Don Donki, Ladies Market, and Citygate. Luggage: HK hotel rooms are small. Pack efficiently or expect to keep one bag under the bed.
💊
Health + practicalBlister plasters (you will walk 15–20k steps/day) · Sunscreen (UV high year-round) · Motion sickness tablet if prone (Ngong Ping cable car, 25 min ride, glass floor) · Paracetamol, antihistamine, antidiarrheal — Watsons HK has everything but buying in Manila is cheaper.
Yes — roughly 3–4× more expensive per day. Street food is genuinely affordable (HKD 40–80 per meal at cha chaan teng) but accommodation, tickets, and anything branded will hit harder. Budget a minimum of ₱3,000–4,000 per person per day excluding hotel and shopping.
Yes — HKD is accepted everywhere in Macau at 1:1. Do not accept MOP as change if returning to HK — Macau Patacas are not accepted in HK and are difficult to exchange. Spend any MOP you receive before boarding the ferry back.
No. English is an official language of HK — widely understood in hotels, restaurants, malls, MTR, and tourist areas. Older vendors at local markets may not speak English. Google Translate (download Cantonese offline pack) handles this well.
Very. Consistently one of the safest major cities in Asia. The crime tourists actually encounter is financial (electronics bait-and-switch, overpricing) not physical. Violent crime against tourists is extremely rare. Standard urban awareness is sufficient.
Stay in your hotel. Everything closes — businesses, transport, ferries, flights. HKO gives ~2 hours advance warning before T8. Use that window to stock water and food. T8 typically lasts hours to a day; the city bounces back quickly. Download the HKO app before flying if visiting May–November.
Not without a separate Chinese visa. HK, Macau, and Mainland China are three completely separate immigration systems. Filipino passport holders require a Chinese visa in advance. Do not cross into Shenzhen or Guangzhou without verifying first.
Weekday. Tuesday to Thursday, always. Weekend World of Frozen queues hit 60–90 min by 10:30AM. The same ride on a Tuesday morning: 10–15 min. If you can’t go on a weekday, buy Early Park Entry (HKD 199) and go directly to World of Frozen at the start.
The Type G power adapter. Every. Single. Time.
📷
Electronics shops — bait and switch (TST / Nathan Rd)Most common tourist financial scam in HK. Attractive display price → agree to purchase → told the display item is “out of stock” → box version is different → accessories “required” → price escalates. Buy electronics only from official brand stores or chains inside proper malls (Fortress, Broadway Photo). If staff approaches from the doorway, walk on.
🚖
Taxi meter tricksAlways confirm the meter is running before you move. If a driver refuses to use the meter — exit and take the next cab. No legitimate licensed urban taxi ever refuses the meter. Some drivers switch meter modes in tunnel toll zones — note your starting fare when you get in.
🧵
Nathan Road tailor shops — “24-hour suit”Not illegal but reliably overpriced for what’s delivered. Quality custom tailoring requires 3–5 days and multiple fittings. If you don’t have time to return for fittings: don’t buy.
🙏
Fake monks soliciting donationsIndividuals in saffron robes approaching tourists near the Big Buddha or temple sites, placing “blessing beads” on your wrist before asking for money. Authentic Buddhist monks do not solicit money from strangers on the street. Politely decline, return anything placed on you, walk on. Confirmed present at Ngong Ping Village.
✈️
Airport arrivals toutsIndividuals at HKG arrivals offering transport, tours, or hotel bookings. Never engage, never hand over your luggage. Go directly to the Klook counter (A13) or the legitimate transport options inside the terminal.
🎫
Fake booking websitesCounterfeit sites mimicking the Peak Tram ticketing page have been officially warned about. Always book through Klook, the official attraction website, or at the venue directly. Verify the URL before paying.
💱
Airport currency exchange — not a scam, just the worst rate in the cityNever exchange large amounts at the airport. Use your GCash, GoTyme, or Maribank card at HSBC or Bank of China ATMs — real rate, zero fees.
