Airalo vs Holafly 2026: Which eSIM Is Better? + ICHINEW

Affiliate disclosure: this page uses Airalo affiliate links and I may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you. Plan prices, networks, and terms can change, so compare the exact destination and final checkout before buying.

Airalo vs Holafly should be decided by the exact trip: destination coverage, local network, data allowance, validity, hotspot rules, activation, support and final payable price. Neither side wins automatically. If Airalo is the better fit after that comparison, use the dedicated Airalo promo-code guide for the current ICHINEW and ICHI rules rather than choosing Airalo because a code is visible on this page.

Decision rule: Choose the provider first. Treat any Airalo discount as a second-step checkout decision, not as the reason Airalo wins the comparison. Airalo promo-code guide

Fast answer

  • Best for most travelers Airalo. It offers local, regional, and global plans, with both fixed and unlimited-style choices in many destinations.
  • Best for simple heavy data Holafly. Pick the number of days and use unlimited-style phone data without tracking a fixed allowance.
  • Best for hotspot Airalo for travelers who share data regularly. Holafly currently limits travel-eSIM hotspot sharing to as much as 1 GB per day.
  • Price result Airalo was slightly cheaper in the current ten-day Europe and Japan examples, and the correct Airalo code widened the difference.

Airalo vs Holafly: my verdict

I would start with Airalo for a normal holiday. It gives you more ways to match the plan to the trip. Light users can buy a smaller fixed allowance, multi-country travelers can choose a regional eSIM, and heavy users can compare an Airalo unlimited package without leaving the same app. Top-ups or renewals are also available on many products.

I would choose Holafly when I want the least mental arithmetic. Its short-trip products are built around unlimited-style data and the number of travel days. That is easy to understand if you stream, upload frequently, or simply do not want to watch a gigabyte counter.

The trade-off is hotspot. Holafly currently says its travel eSIMs allow up to 1 GB of sharing per day, while Airalo lets you use personal hotspot when the device and partner network support it. If your laptop, tablet, or travel companion depends on your phone connection, that difference matters more than a small headline-price gap.

Which is cheaper, Airalo or Holafly?

Price depends on the destination and whether you are comparing fixed data with unlimited-style data. A 5 GB plan and an unlimited plan are not the same product. For a cleaner current snapshot, I checked ten-day unlimited-style plans for Europe and Japan in July 2026.

Ten-day exampleAiraloHolaflyDifference before code
Europe$35$36.50Airalo lower by $1.50
Japan$35$36.50Airalo lower by $1.50

These are snapshots, not permanent prices. Both providers can change packages by market, currency, and date. Holafly may also be better value if its day-based unlimited setup fits you more closely than the available Airalo package.

Airalo after-code example

On an Airalo plan priced at $35, a new user saves $5.25 with ICHINEW, for an example total of $29.75 before taxes or currency adjustments.

A returning user saves $3.50 with ICHI, for an example total of $31.50. Airalo code savings are capped at about $100, although that cap is unlikely to affect a normal tourist eSIM order.

Who should choose Airalo?

Moderate data
You know roughly how many GB you need

A smaller fixed plan often costs less than paying for unlimited data you will not use.

Multi-country route
You want regional or global choices

Airalo has broad regional coverage for Europe, Asia, North America, and cross-region trips.

Laptop or tablet
You need regular hotspot use

Airalo is the safer first check when tethering is part of the trip, subject to the selected network.

Repeat traveler
You want top-ups or renewals

Many Airalo plans can be topped up or renewed inside the account instead of replacing the eSIM.

Who should choose Holafly?

Heavy phone use
You stream or upload frequently

Unlimited-style phone data is easier than estimating a large fixed allowance.

Simple trip length
You want to buy by number of days

Pick the trip duration instead of choosing between several gigabyte packages.

Refund clarity
You value a published request window

Holafly advertises up to six months for qualifying refund requests, subject to its policy.

Phone-only data
You do not rely on hotspot

The 1 GB daily sharing limit matters less when the connection stays on one phone.

Coverage and network quality

Neither provider owns the towers you connect to abroad. Airalo and Holafly partner with local networks, and the available operator can differ by destination and package. That means one brand can be excellent in Japan but less attractive for a specific island, border region, or rural route.

Check the network listed for the exact product, especially when 5G matters. Coverage claims are strongest in cities and transport corridors. Mountains, remote beaches, tunnels, and rural areas can still fall back to slower service or lose signal, just as they can with a local SIM.

Activation, dual SIM, calls, and SMS

Install either eSIM while you still have dependable Wi-Fi. Do not delete the profile after installation. Many eSIM profiles cannot simply be reinstalled after deletion, and recovery rules differ by provider.

Keep your home SIM or home eSIM active if you need your regular number, but turn off data roaming on that line. Set mobile data to the travel eSIM. Most products from both providers are data-only, so normal calls and SMS stay on your home line while WhatsApp, iMessage, FaceTime, Messenger, and similar apps use travel data.

Airalo is the more flexible option if you specifically need calls and SMS because selected Discover+ global plans include them. Check the product label carefully. Buying an ordinary data-only Airalo plan does not create a local phone number.

Support and refund rules

Both companies advertise round-the-clock support. Holafly is especially visible through chat and messaging channels, while Airalo routes help through its app and help center. Save screenshots of the product page, installation instructions, network name, and any error message before contacting support.

Holafly publishes a refund-request window of up to six months for qualifying cases such as trip cancellation, an incompatible or locked phone, or connection problems. Full or partial outcomes depend on the circumstances and usage.

Airalo handles refunds more case by case. A wrong purchase, change of plans, delivery problem, or service issue may qualify under current terms, but approval depends on the order status and whether the eSIM has been used. Refunds to the original payment method can take several business days after approval.

How to compare the final checkout cost

  1. Confirm phone compatibility. Your device must support eSIM and be carrier-unlocked.
  2. Match the same route. Compare the exact countries, not two plans with different coverage.
  3. Match the trip length. A seven-day plan is not enough for a ten-day itinerary, even if it looks cheaper.
  4. Estimate real data use. Include maps, ride apps, social uploads, streaming, work calls, and hotspot.
  5. Read the restrictions. Check fair-use wording, hotspot allowance, activation timing, and calls/SMS.
  6. Apply the Airalo code if Airalo wins. New users use ICHINEW; returning users use ICHI.
  7. Compare the payable total. Include tax and currency conversion, then buy the plan that gives the better fit and final cost.

How to use ICHINEW or ICHI on Airalo

  1. Choose the correct code. Use ICHINEW for a new Airalo account or ICHI for a returning account.
  2. Open Airalo. Search the country, region, or global route you need.
  3. Select the plan. Check data, validity, local network, hotspot, and activation policy.
  4. Open the code field. At checkout, tap Use Airmoney or code, then choose Code.
  5. Redeem and verify. Paste the code and pay only after the final total visibly drops.

Frequently asked questions

Is Airalo better than Holafly in 2026?

Airalo is the better all-round choice when you want local, regional, or global plans, a choice between fixed and unlimited-style data, and hotspot use without a separate daily sharing allowance on most plans. Holafly is easier when you want unlimited-style phone data sold by the number of travel days and do not want to track gigabytes.

Is Holafly better than Airalo for unlimited data?

Holafly is often the simpler unlimited-style option because most short-trip products are sold by trip length. Airalo now also offers unlimited packages in many destinations, so compare the same number of days, fair-use terms, hotspot allowance, and final checkout price before deciding.

Which is cheaper, Airalo or Holafly?

Airalo was slightly cheaper in the July 2026 ten-day Europe and Japan examples on this page, even before an eligible Airalo code. That does not make Airalo cheaper everywhere. Prices vary by destination, plan type, currency, and date, so compare the current checkout totals.

Which has better hotspot support, Airalo or Holafly?

Airalo allows personal hotspot when the device and partner network support it, and sharing normally uses the plan allowance. Holafly currently says its travel eSIM plans allow hotspot sharing up to 1 GB per day. A traveler who regularly tethers a laptop should check the exact destination terms before buying.

Do Airalo and Holafly include calls and SMS?

Most Airalo plans and Holafly short-trip eSIMs are data-only. Airalo has selected global products that include calls and texts, but you must choose one of those specific packages. With data-only plans, use WhatsApp, FaceTime, Messenger, or another internet calling app.

When should I install and activate Airalo or Holafly?

Install the eSIM on reliable Wi-Fi before departure, then follow the selected plan’s validity policy. Most Airalo packages begin when they connect to a supported network. Holafly recommends installing before travel and turning the eSIM on after arrival so the plan begins at the destination.

Which is better for Europe, Airalo or Holafly?

Airalo is the stronger first check for travelers who want fixed or unlimited regional choices and may use hotspot. Holafly suits travelers who prefer a simple day-based unlimited plan. In the July 2026 ten-day Europe example, Airalo showed US$35 and Holafly US$36.50 before an Airalo code.

Which is better for Japan and Asia, Airalo or Holafly?

Airalo is usually the better first check for a country-specific or multi-country Asia plan, especially for moderate data use. Holafly can be worth the higher price for heavy phone data. In the July 2026 ten-day Japan example, Airalo showed US$35 and Holafly US$36.50.

Which Airalo promo code ICHINEW or ICHI should I use after comparing Airalo vs Holafly?

Use ICHINEW for an eligible first Airalo order from a new account. Use ICHI for an eligible order from a returning Airalo account. At checkout, tap Use Airmoney or code, choose Code, redeem the correct code, and pay only after the final total drops.

What if Airalo promo code ICHINEW or ICHI does not work?

Confirm that you selected the code field rather than Airmoney and that the account type matches the code. Re-enter it once. If the code still does not apply, compare the undiscounted Airalo total with Holafly and your mobile carrier instead of forcing the purchase.

Plan prices and policies were rechecked in July 2026; use the exact destination page and final checkout total as the source of truth.
