The beating heart of Hanoi. A lake with a Turtle Tower mid-water, a red wooden bridge leading to Ngoc Son Temple on a small island, and locals walking laps every morning and evening. One of the best urban lakes in Southeast Asia — just sit on a bench and watch the city happen around you.

36 streets, each historically named after its trade — Silk Street, Tin Street, Paper Street. Getting lost here is half the point. Every alley has a street food cart, a hidden temple, or a tailor. Go at night when the Walking Street section closes to traffic and fills with people.

The embalmed body of Ho Chi Minh displayed in a granite mausoleum — one of the most historically significant sites in Vietnam. The complex includes his stilted house, Presidential Palace gardens, and One Pillar Pagoda. Note: the mausoleum closes for 2–3 months each year (usually Sep–Oct) for maintenance.

Vietnam’s first university, built in 1070 — five courtyards, gates, and pavilions. Beautiful and tranquil, especially early morning before tour groups arrive. The stone stelae list Vietnam’s doctoral scholars going back to 1484 — read a few and the dates hit differently. Give yourself at least 1.5 hours.

A narrow residential alley where a working train passes inches from the cafe tables on either side — twice a day. You need to buy a coffee at a track-side cafe to access the alley, but it still delivers every time. Check the train schedule before you go.

Originally built by the French to hold Vietnamese political prisoners, later used to hold American POWs. The museum tells both stories. Sobering and important — similar emotional weight to the War Remnants Museum in HCMC. Not suitable for young children.

Vietnam’s oldest pagoda (founded 6th century), on a small peninsula in West Lake. Most photogenic at sunset when the pagoda glows orange against the water. Very tranquil — a beautiful contrast to the chaotic Old Quarter.

A French colonial building from 1911, modeled on the Paris Opera — the architecture still stops people mid-stride. Worth a photo stop even without attending a performance. The surrounding Ba Dinh district has excellent colonial architecture for an evening walk.

Hanoi pho is lighter and more delicate than HCMC pho — cleaner broth, fewer herbs, no bean sprouts. The best spots open early (6–10AM) and close when they sell out. Ask your hotel for the nearest queue-worthy stall.

Hanoi’s most famous dish — grilled pork patties in a sweet/sour broth, with rice noodles and fresh herbs on the side. Immortalized by Anthony Bourdain and Obama. Any local spot is great for ~60–80k VND.

Invented in Hanoi — Vietnamese robusta coffee mixed with whipped egg yolk, sugar, and condensed milk. The result is somewhere between coffee and tiramisu. Giang Cafe in the Old Quarter is the original.

A proper sandwich loaded with pate, pickled veg, herbs, and choice of fillings for ~30–40k VND. Several excellent spots in the Old Quarter.

The most famous street beer corner in Vietnam — plastic stools, fresh draft beer for 10k VND (~₱25), street food vendors weaving through the crowd. Best “Hanoi experience” for the price. Busiest on weekend evenings.

One of the great dishes of Vietnamese cuisine. Snakehead fish marinated in turmeric and fermented shrimp paste, grilled over charcoal at your table with a sizzling pan of dill and spring onion. The restaurant on Cha Ca Street has been serving this since 1871. Budget ₱300–500 per person. Go for lunch before the tourist rush.

Tomato and crab broth with thin rice noodles, soft tofu, and a crab-and-pork cake on top. Tangier and more complex than pho — the bright red broth is the giveaway. Best from early-morning street stalls before 9AM. A bowl runs 40–60k VND. It doesn’t look like much. It tastes like everything.

The main event in Sapa. The cable car (world’s longest 3-wire) lifts you to 3,143m — Vietnam’s highest peak. Giant Buddha statue, temple, and views that stretch forever on clear days. Book tickets online — sells out on weekends. Closes in bad weather. Senior and kid-friendly.

The most beautiful valley in Sapa — a wide expanse of layered rice terraces, H’mong villages, and mountain backdrop. Best September–October when the terraces turn brilliant gold. April–May has lush green planting season views.

A Black H’mong minority village 3km from Sapa town — walkable downhill (steep coming back up). Traditional weaving, handicrafts, and a waterfall at the bottom. Entry ticket required. Best in the morning before tour groups arrive.

A glass-bottomed suspension bridge over a deep valley gorge — vertigo-inducing in the best way. About 15 min by motorbike or car from Sapa town.

A giant swing over the valley — the view with the rice terraces behind you is the most-shared shot from Sapa — you’ll know it the moment you’re standing there. Modest entry fee. Short trip from town.

Two impressive waterfalls accessible by motorbike from Sapa (20–30 min). Silver Waterfall is larger and more dramatic. Love Waterfall requires a short forest trek. Both best after the rainy season when water volume is highest.

The French colonial Sa Pa Stone Church is the town’s landmark — moody and beautiful in the fog or at night. The surrounding market area has H’mong crafts and local food. Great for evening strolls and local snacks.

A forested mountain at the edge of Sapa town — accessible on foot with a short uphill walk. Passes terraced gardens, orchid houses, and viewpoints over the town and valley. Best in spring when flowers bloom.

A mountain roller coaster down the hillside with great valley views. Surprisingly fun, and kid and family-friendly — one of the more unexpectedly enjoyable things to do in Sapa.

A peaceful Buddhist monastery on the outskirts of Sapa — striking architecture set against forested mountain slopes. Best early morning when mist hangs over the grounds. Short Grab ride from town.

Sapa’s cold mountain streams are ideal for salmon and trout farming — these fish are a local specialty unavailable in the lowlands. The salmon hot pot (lẩu cá hồi) is the most popular preparation: light broth with fresh salmon, mushrooms, and greens.

A traditional H’mong dish — slow-cooked horse or pig offal hotpot with mountain spices. Not something you’ll find outside the northern highlands. Sold at the Sapa weekend market and a few restaurants in town. If you want to try something you’ll find nowhere else in Vietnam, this is it.

At the town square in the evening, vendors sell mountain corn grilled over charcoal and sticky rice in bamboo sections (cơm lam). ~10–20k VND each — the perfect cheap snack in the cold mountain air.

The most consistently recommended sit-down restaurant in Sapa — excellent northwestern Vietnam cuisine in a cosy setting with mountain views. Try the bamboo-smoked dishes and local mushroom soup. Worth it for one proper dinner.

Medicinal rice wine infused with mountain herbs — served warm in small ceramic cups. Sold at the market and many restaurants. If someone offers you a cup at a village, accepting is considered respectful.

Buy at Lotte Mart or Vinmart, not souvenir shops. G7 3-in-1, Trung Nguyen, and Highlands Coffee packs cost 40–60% less in supermarkets than the Old Quarter shops selling the exact same product in prettier packaging. A bag of G7 (30 sachets) is about ₱130 at Lotte Mart. You can carry several bags without breaking the 7kg limit.

Hang Gai Street (Silk Street) in the Old Quarter is the best place for silk scarves, ao dai fabric, and embroidered table linens. Quality varies enormously — feel the fabric and check stitching before buying. Expect to haggle: start at 40% of asking price. A good silk scarf runs ₱250–500 after haggling.

Hanoi’s lacquerware — bowls, boxes, chopsticks, and wall art — is genuinely high-quality artisan work. The best pieces are found in the narrow streets around Hang Khanh and Hang Bong. Fragile items can be wrapped to survive the flight. A nice lacquer bowl set runs ₱500–1,500 depending on quality.

Vietnamese cashews are some of the best in the world — raw, roasted, salted, or spiced. Dried longan, candied ginger, and tamarind candy are all excellent pasalubong that survive the trip home. Buy from Lotte Mart or Co.opmart — prices are 30–50% lower than the Old Quarter souvenir market.

A three-storey indoor market in the northern Old Quarter covering everything from fabric wholesale to street food. Ground level is good for cheap clothing, household goods, and bulk spices. More authentic than tourist-facing shops, prices are lower, but most signage is Vietnamese only. Great for the experience even if you don’t buy anything.

The Sapa weekend market and the stalls around the Stone Church sell handmade H’mong indigo-dyed textiles, batik fabric, embroidered bags, and silver earrings and bracelets. These are genuinely handmade — you won’t find them in Hanoi. Prices are low (₱100–500 per piece) and buying directly from H’mong women supports the community. Haggle gently — margins are already thin.

Avoid “genuine” branded goods (fakes are everywhere — customs may confiscate them). Skip mass-produced “handmade” items near the cable car terminus — these are factory-made. Don’t buy from hawkers who place items in your hands without asking — the price you’ll be quoted is 10x fair value.
